I’m speculating that not losing these last 2 games and going out with a big win was worth it to FU for the $1.75 reduction in the buy out. That shines up his resume and his ego, and since he knew he was a “dead man walking,” it made sense to just leave on the best terms he could get.

For Whit, it’s not exactly a $1.75 reduction in the buyout … it’s a reduction of $1.75M + whatever salary FU would have earned … approximately (1/12)*$4M+ or (1/3)*$1M+ = $333K+.

So I estimate that FU got a buyout of approximately $7.42M+, not $7.75M.

And from Whit’s perspective, a better PR look than when Tom Landry found out on the TV news in his motel room that Jerry Jones had fired him.

That letter was not written by FU (maybe a 1st draft) and not cranked out in a day. FU made up his mind shortly after the previous Wednesday’s meeting with Whit and that started the ball rolling.

I think FU finally pulled the trigger after his agent and lawyers worked through the outline of what FU wanted.

Whit most likely learned about this sometime late Monday … he looked a little shell shocked at the podium to say the least. 🤔
